The Scottish Government's External Affairs Minister met representatives of 12 Scottish non-governmental organisations (NGOs) this afternoon (Friday) to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

Fiona Hyslop called the meeting to gather intelligence from the Scottish international development community on the latest situation and to help establish how the Scottish Government can best support the Scottish response.

The Minister asked the organisations present to identify their requirements for support as soon as possible.

Fiona Hyslop said:

"I am sure all of Scotland will join in expressing deepest concern for the people of Haiti at this most difficult time The Scottish reputation for generosity is sure to be reflected in donations to the Disaster Emergencies Committee appeal which is now open.

"I am most impressed by how these organisations are putting aside some very personal tragedies and coming together to coordinate a Scottish response to this terrible disaster.

"We stand ready to help and have already made the offer of temporary secondments of Scottish Government staff to provide administrative support to NGOs. We have also agreed to make links between the NGOs and other bodies - like local government, trade unions and business organisations - to assist in raising awareness of the fundraising campaign.

"If financial assistance is required, I have asked for details as soon as possible so we can make decisions based on what can best be achieved in the area."
